Anger is a natural and normal reaction that is often used to responds to threats or losses. Anger is a powerful emotion that can have many negative consequences if it is not managed properly. Sometimes serious anger issues are a sign of a mental health or behavioural condition.

How do I help?

When your child is angry or acting out, try to calm him or her by not becoming angry at them for being angry. Your calmness will help your child relax. If in instance you’re outside around other people and your child is angry, pull your child aside. Being alone may make him or her more comfortable and willing to share the reason for the anger. Also, talk to your child in kind tone & use a level that they understand.

Younger children may not understand their emotions. In these cases, it’s best to ask them to draw their feelings showing why they feel that way. You could also teach them the common signs of anger such as:

• Clenched fists

• Urge to scream or hit

• Body shakes

When children are old enough to understand their feelings, it’s important to talk to them in more detail. Doing so let them know that anger is normal. Talk about the situation and their feelings. This can help them, and you figure out why they’re angry. Once you identify your child’s anger, help them find ways to control it.

Anger issues can worsen or become habits if nothing’s done. Here are some symptoms of serious anger issues:

• Has frequent outburst that escalate quickly

• Has a hard time sitting still and focusing

• Is verbally abusive

• Physically hurts oneself or others

• Threatens to harm or kill oneself or other

If you think your child has a serious anger issue, bring them to see the doctor for diagnosis. Seeing a doctor doesn’t mean they have a serious issue. Your child may need guidance on how to express and manage their feelings. And as a parent, you may need tips on how to support your child.
