Does violence in media affect my child?

Yes, violence in media may affect your child depending on how impressionable they are but note that not every child may be affected. However, it is still important to talk to your child and limit their consumption of violence in media.

Research has shown that watching violent entertainment can lead to increase in aggressive attitudes, values, and behaviours, especially since young children are highly impressionable. It can also lead to desensitisation in which children become more comfortable with what they see on-screen, and this affects your child’s moral evaluation.

However, being exposed to violence in media does not affect all children. Just because your child caught a glimpse of violence on television or computer, that does not mean they will definitely be affected by it. Dr Michael Rich, co-founder of the Centre on Media and Child Healthcare at Boston Children’s Hospital, said that some children who play violent video games show no signs of influence in psychological tests while others have higher tendencies of turning hostile and physically violent, and feel more anxious and fearful.

What can I do?

No matter how hard you try to protect your child from it, violence in media is unavoidable. As a parent, you may be concerned about how it might affect your child’s behaviour especially when they are spending a substantial amount of time watching television or playing video games with violence in them.

The best thing is for you to limit the amount of violence your children is exposed to while not wholly shunning them from it. Check out ratings and find out about the content your child is about to consume. Both films and video games are rated the same way. However, online videos, such as YouTube videos, are harder to judge but some content creators do leave warnings before their videos, in the comment sections or in the video descriptions. If not, you can always skip ahead of videos to see if there are any violence or explicit content in them.

It is also important to talk to your children about the consequences of violence. Even though the violence in video games and movie may not be realistic, it is important for children to know that in real life, they aren’t allowed to follow the violent behaviors displayed, and what are the consequences if they do.
