PSLE is a very crucial moment as they will be moving on to secondary studies and it is important they are able to do well enough to get into the best schools in Singapore. They will be tested on various different subjects ranging from Science, Math and English as well as their mother tongue language. In this blog we will be touching on English Oral Tips.

English oral is just as any other aspect of psle English exams however, the only challenge is preparing for it. Preparation is key when it comes to scoring high in this assessment. Some parents may think that you just have to read and describe the sample to the invigilators but there are pertinent things you will have to look out for. Here are some tips on how you may help your child.

Tip #1; Ensure your child practises sample oral exams at home, practice is what it really comes down to. Reading various passages and how to answer them will give your child a solid foundation on how he/she should construct their sentences. You may also allow your child to refer to the answer sheet(if provided) so they may understand what is required of them. If the answer sheet is not provided you may then refer to any notes or sample passages they may have done in school to get a better understanding.

Tip #2; Children under pressure may tend to read very quickly and thus causing them to mispronounce or miss out key information from their answers. It is vital that your child speaks slowly and in a calm manner so as to not stumble on his/her words. Before each practice instill this habit of them breathing in and out slowly for 30 seconds or more if required to prevent them from tensing up. They should also aim to sit upright as slouching or poor posture limits your diaphragm and belly breathe.

Tip #3; During their actual passage reading period, tell your child to read and understand the question being asked carefully so as to not misconstrued what they are really being asked. Children have the tendency to jump straight to finding the key points without fully understanding the question so it is best they take at least 15-30 seconds before searching for their keypoints. 

Tip #4; When practising at home, you should communicate with your child about the passage and ask them questions similar to what they would be asked in an actual exam. This allows them to develop a very natural flow when conversing and with a good amount of practice your child should be ready in no time.

Last but not least, ask your kids to just have some fun. It is very important that they are calm, cool and collected and this cannot be achieved if they are stressed out. Asking them to have fun with this will allow them to release some tension and perform much better.
